(And that’s just what they’ll do).

I’m literally speechless right now, and what’s more worrying is I’m also kind of out of breath.. which is why I’ll keep this brief: I think I have just found the best boot known to man kind. I can’t even. I just. Ugh. Am I being Punk’d right now? These are too perfect. Where are you Ashton?!

Come behind the scenes with me and my incredible creative team on our “The Sunday Girl” photoshoot, brought to life at a dreamy 70s beach shack and told through the lens of acclaimed fashion photographer Madelyn Rose.

The beauty look was created using 100% organic cosmetics by makeup master and natural-health advocate Emmily Banks. She achieved a soft and natural look with gentle highlights and hints that The Sunday Girl might have gotten ready for the day, but decided to take time to her self and crawl back in to bed. Hair was crafted by Chantal Davis who tamed my usually salt drenched tresses and pushed for glamour with soft curls, deep parts and amped up the texture.

The Sunday Girl is something (or rather, someone) very close to my heart. I went through some big life changes in 2012  and took time off work to soul search, heal and ultimately create space for more moments of solitude, taking a morning off to just be myself in my own beach-side sanctuary. We’ve subtly communicated this through the setting of The Sunday Girl, she relishes those extra few minutes sleeping in, she journals her dreams in the sun, she gets to be exactly who she is in her own skin.

Sometimes it’s easy for us to feel guilty for over indulging in rest and relaxation; society says that we need to be go-go-go in order to be woman who can “have it all”.  However, the upheld ideal of the Super Woman who can juggle work, life, career, a family, a relationship, friendships and her health seemingly at ease, usually fails to depict her taking a morning off, which is just as important as planning that dinner party or nailing that pitch at work.

And that’s what The Sunday Girl is all about. Those mornings where you can potter around the house, soak up the sun, switch off, read a book, drink tea and be exactly who you are in your own skin. Those mornings where you get to be you, do what you want without fear of judgement or self-judgement. Indulge. Play with some fabulous jewellery, try on some of your favourite clothes, devour a delicious breakfast and then when you’re done, go straight back to bed and relax. And that’s what I do almost every Sunday, my ritual, my time to be no body else but me.

A few posts back we spoke about our inner dialogue and how more often than not (I’m going to take a wild guess and say 9 times out of 10) it’s negative and self berating. Mean things we wouldn’t ever say about another person or to a person – this is the stuff we’re telling ourselves internally, and what’s worse, saying it to others out-loud.

So we know announcing our insecurities is toxic. Well, what now?

It’s time to unlearn those well rehearsed lines sister, because you’ve got them so down pat that I’m going to give you some new ones to master. Let’s re-write the script of your life where you give yourself the dazzling lead role. You are the heroin who saves the day (after all, no one else is going to ride up on a handsome horse and save you), so why not play her?

With time and with practise, eventually you’ll graduate from understudy to lead actress. You’ll be leaping around the stage light as air feeling free and confidant. Like the most practised method actor, you will become the heroine, making life of the words written in the script and grow into the strong woman who is in control of her life and of her thoughts.

Since posting these positive affirmations on my Instagram and Tumblr, I’ve had countless emails and comments from girls putting these affirmations in to practise. Most have been printed out and stuck on a mirror at home, a moodboard or above a desk at work.

More recently some girls in Queensland were mowed down by a speeding motorist, one in particular was very badly injured. I had heard it on the news, feeling so disconnected to these young women. How could I help? As if The Universe heard my calls, a friend of mine worked with the pair and passed on my affirmation to her colleague still recovering in hospital. She was struggling with how to deal with a new and unfamiliar body. I heard that my affirmation had been made the background to her phone and almost instantly my words inspired her to learn to love her body and completely shifted her perspective.

So let’s start with my two favourite positive affirmations I’ve ever written. These two pack a powerful love-filled punch. Saying these to yourself every morning is an extremely powerful way to invite in fresh, positive perspective. At first you might be met with resistance, and you might think you sound silly, even like a phoney, hearing these words come out of your mouth. But that’s okay. Change doesn’t happen overnight, especially when we’re trying to kick a habit we’ve had for so long. That’s why I’ve created the affirmations below.

From me, with love, to you…

Late night reflections

yoga fish poseIf you’re anything like me and find most of your juicy and rich inspiration in the wee hours of the morning when it feels like the rest of the world is sleeping, then you know how hard it is to quieten down that over-active brain of yours. While I’m proud of my late night bursts of energy and inspiration, I know that rising and setting with the sun is a really vital step toward optimum health. Why? Because humans are diurnal animals. Back before time was a thing”, ironically our bodies worked (and still do) on a 24 hour clock.
