“If you own only one sweater, make sure it’s cashmere”
The foundations of Parisienne dressing philosophy are firmly rooted in what cannot be seen from the outside and lay deep beneath red lips, tousled bangs, immaculately tailored jeans and fresh baguettes tucked chicly under arm. But it’s the exterior of the French woman that mystifies us, that captivating, timeless can’t-quite-put-my-finger-on-it allure that lingers long after she’s left the room. The je ne sais quoi that implies “I know something you don’t”, just like the high quality of her cashmere sweater – a prized possession she cherishes with ferocious pride while you assume she just picked it out and threw it on without any effort or consideration.
Ahh, the cashmere sweater. Something I had always delayed as an investment that future-Miann would make, until now….

Lately I’ve felt a pull toward minimising my consumption, in other words, my wardrobe. Ever so slowly reducing my closet down to the pieces I wear on high rotation, sectioning aside the flamboyant loud styles or fast fashion items I purchased on a whim until I decide what to do with them. I can’t remember the last occasion I bought something new that I hadn’t been thinking about adding to my wardrobe for a very long time. Maybe it’s part of growing up, but the less I buy into trends and invest my money wisely, the happier I feel.
One of my (many) French style icons Caroline de Maigret published How To Be Parisian Wherever You Are which I’m sure you’ve read. Beyond the nuggets of wisdom about disarming men (grab a strangers arm to walk down the stairs) and embracing your powerful femininity (talk politics with your mouth and sex with your eyes), what struck me most were the wardrobe aphorisms dished out like a true Parisian:
WHAT YOU WON’T FIND IN HER CLOSET
Three-inch heels. Why live life halfway? Logos. You are not a billboard. Nylon, polyester, viscose and vinyl will make you sweaty, smelly and shiny. If you own only one sweater, make sure it’s cashmere.
